|"P.S.S. Blue sharks are not game fish :-)"|
But they are a ton of fun on a fly rod and they are perfect for teaching fly-rod newbies how to fight big fish on light tackle and leaders; how to make a good IGFA leader and just how much pressure it takes to break one.
I used to take my clients who were going on a tarpon trip to Costa Rica back in the early 70's blue shark fishing just to show them how much pressure they could exert on a 20-lb Bimini class leader. They had no idea. I used to tell them to try to break the leader with a flex in the rod (not high sticking). Some of them thought they were going to get pulled out of the skiff.
When they finally got to CR and hooked into their first tarpon they at least knew how much pressure they could put on the fish once it settled down. I told them to pull to within ounces of the leader's breaking strength and they did. Had I not taken them blue shark fishing and made them pull hard (no one cared if they bust off a fish), they wouldn't have had a clue and would have been hours on a good poon. A 20-pound, IGFA leader is hard to break with a steady pull from a somewhat flexed rod.
Gamefish? It's all in the eyes of the beholder.
