|Sounds like you had a awesome time in Loreto! Way to go.|
I am trying not to be negative, because I believe fishing is all about having fun, but trolling up billfish with a fly is not fly fishing for them. It is having fun and catching fish with a fly rod, but it's not fly fishing. The line has to be drawn somewhere. We might as well troll the flies for tarpon or permit. It's the easy way out.
Sails and marlin that come up for the trolled fly are easily teased fish. Any mullet or mackerel stitched up will do the trick, or even a troll a hook-less pink chicken-fly, then when the fish comes up, tease the fish in, and pull the chicken-fly teaser, then you can throw the boat into neutral and cast the fly at the fish. Its easy and much more rewarding when its done right.
I am not saying that you have to fish this way, I think folks should have fun.
I know its a touchy subject, but flyfishing is casting a fly, not trolling it.
