If you are a veteran tarpon fly angler or a novice or a wannabee, you'll want - no - you need to get a copy of Bill Bishop's new book High Rollers: Fly Fishing For Giant Tarpon.
It's one of the best works on the subject I've read and it is superbly written and illustrated by artist Bill Howard.
I've been fly-fishing for tarpon since 1973 and while not completely through the book I've thoroughly enjoyed it and have learned new things about tarpon and fly-fishng for them; or have been caused to re-think many things.
Here's what HeadWater Books has to say about it:
"In High Rollers, artist and hardcore angler Bill Bishop tackles all aspects of tarpon fishing - from building leaders to bringing fish in quickly. Each chapter explores the core aspects of tarpon fishing in details, including step-by-step instructions for tying IGFA leaders; the nuances of finding, casting to, hooking, and fighting giant tarpon; and insights and tips for running the boat, seeing fish, and reading the fish's behavior. In addition to the technical aspects, Bishop's stories and humor take a look at the personal side of fishing, reminding us that despite the serious undertaking of battling a 150-pound tarpon, fishing is still supposed to be fun."
Here's what Lefty says about the book:
"Bill Bishop has addressed the mental, physical, humorous and technical aspects of fishing for tarpon in this invaluable book, writing in such a way that it is both entertaining and instructive. I really like his style."
I couldn't agree more with Lefty or the publisher. If you are considering fly-fishing for tarpon and have never done it before, you need to read this book. If you are a vet, you will become even better at it after reading it.
There are more than 130 detailed pen-and-ink illustrations by Bill Bishop; and many stunning photos by Mark Hatter.
Published by HeadWater Books, distributed by Stackpole Books. It sells for $29.95, hardcover 7-1/4 X 9-1/8; 186 pages; 8-page color section.
