Mel was teaching a bunch of us rookies in a 2 1/2 day "Essence" class at the park near hear his home. While giving his intro, he was goofing around with a helicopter cast, dropping the fly on the bills of our caps and walking it off into our laps. Very casual: pick it up, find another target. Anyway, he asked if anyone knew why you always wear (sun)glasses and a brimmed hat when flyfishing? We all proudly and sincerely announced that it was "to help you see fish and protect your face from the sun". With his usual good cheer, this was heartily rejected by Mr. K. "No, it's so when you hit yourself in the head with your fly you won't loose and eye or an ear."

My fishing partners are really happy that the "loop pull" method has been invented. They take some small consolation in my hitting myself nearly as often as I do them, less in the sure knowledge that I would much prefer apologizing to self-surgery.
