The great Rupe Andrews, former Director Alaska DFG, once told me that all the king salmon they came across that were over 100 pounds had some sort of physical or genetic defect that made them sterile.

This possibility had also been confirmed by the work done first at UC Davis and then at the University of Washington by Dr. Gary Thorgaard to heat-treat fertile trout eggs to produce triploid chromosone fish that were sterile. Idaho has refined this technique and now plants all catchable trout that are triploids.
