Just wanted to thank all those who posted BD well-wishes. Your kind words and thoughts are very much appreciated. I was travelling up to Ganglers on my BD and I actually got a little special treatment when one of the airlines agents noted it on my passport.
Ken Hanley and I had a blast on this trip. The fishing wasn't as fast as it was last year, probably about normal or a little slower than usual. We experienced some surly weather for 3 out of the 6 days of fishing: two very windy days and one afternoon thunder/lightening storm that was a hell-raiser. Ken, our guide and I rode it out on a protected bay but the lightening crashing all around us was nerve-racking and a bit scary - we could smell the ozone...
KH caught some dandies and lost a few big pike, we got into a good walley bite with about 35 landed to 24 inches in a couple of hours and I managed only one laker on fly and missed a monster. We had two great sessions on top water with Gurglers and I even got a walleye on a gurgler.
Mike Matica and Pat Tatero (sp?) experienced excellent fishing, landing many trophy pike on fly and some walleye.
Rod MacRae also enjoyed some fun top water pike'n with Gurlgers and caught plenty of fish, despite the fact he and his partner Walley, experience some boat problems a couple of days. I'll let each of them post their own views on the fishing.
This is the first time in nearly 12 years of fly fishing Canada for pike, that I personally didn't land a trophy-sized pike. I don't think I even hooked one but I did land a few 10 to 12 pounders and lots of medium, all-purpose fish.
Ken and I had plenty of action on all days but one when the wind just pounded us. I'd rather have rain than wind any day. One of our slowest days produced 53 pike on fly for the boat and many dropped and missed.
All-in-all, I believe the trip was a huge success and except for the typical fender-benders, fishing was pretty good, especially for those who new to this particular game. I will post a more detailed report with photos/tackle/rigging info a bit later. Look for the page link on the Ganglers trip promo page. I'll let you know when it's up.
Ken Hanley and hopefully Bob Clouser will be hosting the trip next year. I'm passing this one time because I'm spending nearly 4 weeks in Australia next June. Look for more details on Ken and Bob's Ganglers pikefest next July.
It was great showing you the North Seal River system, its great fish and Ganglers Lodge, Ken. It was a blast, buddy!
