I've wondered the same thing about RIO Extreme. As some say, black is pretty unobtrusive -
fish might ignore it like they ignore a big hook hanging out of a fly...
It might all be about positive triggers, and ignoring many but not all
negative ones...
The fine diameter also has to help in letting the fly do its own thing a bit more as
if it is moving freely.
