Flash happens at any place on the leader . . . sometimes the whole thing. In these two strips the flash travels up the last part of the leader to the fly. The amount of flash is determined by the leader's relationship to the sun and the spatial lighting in the water. In this case the sun is almost overhead. The flash here is actually pretty subdued because the spatial lighting is very diffuse due to so much light being reflected off the sandy bottom. . . note that the streamer doesn't cast a shadow when even an inch off the riverbed.

In short, I think there might be a place for matte leaders when chasing spooky fish.
