| While I was further down the Keys in Sugarloaf and was specifically targeting permit, I have to say that I saw fewer fish of any type in six days of fishing than at any other time in 25 years of fishing down there. Speculation is that the warm winter somehow convinced the permit to head off spawning just about a month sooner than usual. The wind and overcast made tarpon fishing tough when we tried that. Perhaps the biggest surprise was the total lack of bonefish in spots that usually have a ton of them. Again, visibility was not very good most of them time, but we should have seen nervous water, tails, or something. Even the number of sharks, cuda, rays, and so forth was far less than usual and most of the flats we fished had no fish of any type on them. I'm heading back in three weeks, this time to Islamorada, and hope that things improve a lot before then. |
