I have spent some time "watching" fish strike trolled lures on a sonar screen. The old paper graph machines were even more revealing. Fish invariably approached and struck the lure from below - which is not surprising, considering the location of the eyes on the top side of a fish's head. I would not spend too much time worrying about what either a floating or a sinking leader looks like from above, or even from the side.
