I always used crab flies for permit. Mostly velcro crabs and Merkins. Since I fished Asacension Bay in september 2011 and I caught a permit on an ugly shrimp fly from guide "Careto" Jose. I dont have a picture from that fly but looked like a salmon shrimp fly...and then I started experimenting on shrimp flies such as Eduardo Arceo's from Campeche.

I got another permit on it yesterday. So far I am 3 for 3. But it is mostly small fish caught. I belive small permit that are found in big schools are way better eaters than big lonely permit...

I also tried the Avalon fly. But so far I got 2 refusals. On one the permit spooked, I belive the fly I was using was quite heavy. Heavy dumbell eyes plus 5 chain eyes...But this dosent means anything I still got to try the Avalon fly somemore, 2 permit is just not enough. It is just dificult to move to another fly when you are starting to be confident about this Shrimp fly....

Anyway, as with permit fishing it dosent means anything final. But maybe someone will find that shrimp pattern fishy.

Best
Nassim Joaquin.-
