When something passes between an observer and a light source a shadow, not a glare, is the result. A matte tippet will cast a more distinct shadow at lower angles but less glare at higher deflections. It's the same old tradeoff deal as near as I can figure, but I'll trade more glare for less shadow when fishing dry flies.
