In Florida you would have to have and use a $50 kill tag to take a tarpon that size out of the water since FL fish and game assumes it will die. There is ample evidence that the bone structure can't support the weight of a tarpon that size. Also, as you discovered, the fish left a lot of the protective slime it needs to live on the boat. I am sure there is just a basic lack of knowledge rather than any intent to do harm. Please spread the word. Probably a dead fish.
