This wasn't exactly fly fishing but I used a fly rod on a down rigger. The boat was a six pack. The rod was a 11' 12 wt. CND Atlantis. The captain let me fish this way all day and I hooked up about 10 times on salmon. Once the down rigger releases it'd just the fly rod and fish. I also confess I used real anchovy and not a bait fish imatation, I lossed the first couple of fish to seals and the captain said I wouldn't get any in with a fly rod but it did outfish everyone else on the boat that were using conventional tackle. In the past I've fly fished for salmon from the Halfmoon Bay breakwater and experienced the same thing Dan mentioned, that they follow right up to the rod and then don't bite, but it is fun trying.
