One suggestion you might consider: add some extra weight to the front of your shooting head. I use T-14, and add a piece of T-14 which has been doubled over. So I've got on a 28' foot standard T-14 head on intermediate running line (I use Airflow Ridge), with a 6' piece of T-14 doubled to make a 3' piece looped on the business end of the shooting head. With a 9 wt, you can cast this pretty easily although not super far.

The extra weight at the front takes the fly down faster & reduces belly as the line & fly drop. I've been using this rig for lings & rockfish for several seasons now. This year when I try targeting salmon I'm going to use T-17 or possibly something heavier for the mini-head piece to move the front end down even faster.

Last year I spent ~3 days in Monterey Bay trying for salmon over about a month's time but never got bit. I was using clousers of various colors but never thought to add scent or soak them in something. I will definitely be trying that this year - good idea! I hit Monterey Bay because I fish from a kayak & it's more accessible.

Hope to see you out there.
Bill
