I have all three of the original BASS rods and prefer the Smallmouth for what you describe. The bluegill model with the included line works just fine but I prefer the smallmouth, or perhaps more accurately the 290 gr line that comes with it, because I prefer the greater ease with which it can toss flies of the size you describe. When I toss small inch long bluegill poppers with a 4wt rod I usually upline to a 6wt line. So you can see how I like to do things. So the bluegill rod will work fine, I just prefer the smallmouth for the situation you describe.
