| A long time ago, in a place far away, I was an 11 year old child working a paper route. The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, Ohio. Memory being what it is ,the cold, early mornings (4 AM before school), the smell of fresh ink, the stain of it on my fingers , hands, and cuffs are nostalgic now. After a year I saved enough money to buy my first camera- a Minolta X570- if I remember correctly- later I would buy an X700 which I would use well past the advent of digital. I bought three lenses- 28, 55, 70-200. My grandfather was a minister and I would take pictures of weddings, baptisms... A local lab would develop my color film, 1.50$ a picture and I remember how happy my clients were. When I fished it was special to hump the camera to the river, cover it with plastic bags- if Simms made a water proof camera bag back then I did not know and it would have been beyond my means. Every picture was a thought and a moment in time. When you fished with THE CAMERA you expected a good fish. If a picture was wonderful you would remember the light, the aperture, time, the place and space. In college when you shot your beer drinking buddy who happened to be a tennis prodigy in the Arizona twilight with that grainy 1000 film the idea of motion and light... well... it is an ephemeral existence. As wonderful as digital cameras are- my phone can shoot in the dark- as easy as they are to use, the wonderful images that they have made possible, the students that have afforded them- where is the moment? Do I think when I shoot? Or do I just press the button and look on my monitor? One of those shots is bound to be good. Do people still have those wonderful pictures that make a family album? I have a picture of my great grandfather from 1910. Will my great grandchildren have a picture of me? I know you can print digital; but do you? How long will this hard drive last? I apologize for the lengthy reply. On another note why is it so hard for a trout fisher to throw 28 ft. of T14 with an 8 weight? |
