I am curious why you went clear over to Mexicali to cross over ? Is the Tecate crossing not open? In 1994 , after a week south of Puerticetos on the beach fishing,we drove north towards Mexicali. It was Easter weekend , and San Felipe was crazy. Thousands of college kids,and no police. They were all at a barbeque north of town. Mexicali did not seem like a good option , so we crossed over the mountains towards Ensanada , and then went over at Tecate. Very smooth, little traffic.
