one option not mentioned is to use a shooting head system - one problem for beginners learning to double haul is if they do not apply the proper power to the back cast, when they tug, there is no slide that follows. For the slide to occur, you have to have enough power and proper application on the back cast so that after you tug, the line will on its own accord slide back up. This is much easier to accomplish with a mono running line rather than a fly line sliding back and forth in the guides.
That being said, I am not convinced that you should even be practicing the double haul until you get the basic cast down such that you can throw a good crisp back cast and forward cast with a full fly line and actually shoot some line |
