The tarpon fishing on Long Island is hit and miss. In 5 trips to Deadmans Cay since 2003, I have hooked exactly 2 tarpon. That said, the tarpon fishery seems to be improving there. Other guys I know have done better. There is the possibity of finding some tarpon along the shoreline right at Deadmans but your guide has to be willing to put in the time looking for them. On my last trip to Deadmans just this last Feb we spent a couple hours on two different days trying to catch a tarpon. We saw a couple rollers over a deep hole and two baby tarpon next to Deadmans. We also saw a school of half dozen mid size tarpon (40 Lbs or so) coming into the sound from the ocean,,,,,we weren't expecting any tarpon there, so we weren't ready for them.
My Long Island guide recently emailed me and he did say that he has been been seeing more tarpon lately, so my take as a "gear head" is you might as well be ready for them, ,,,just in case,,,,
However, I haven't fished with Dwayne so I don't know if he is willing to target the tarpon which is another consideration. I think his opinion is worth a lot more than mine!!!

PS. Permit are a real long shot... Some guides will go out to Hog Cay (closer to the Exumas than Long Island and do find some permit there regularily but the weather has to "perfect" to make the run out there. |
