| I fish my squid patterns on T-14 in rip currents averaging about 20-25 feet deep. The fish can be anywhere in the water column. Sometimes they will chase squid to the surface and the squid will expend the water in its jets and they are temporarily disabled until they can refill their jet. The Striped Bass will just suck them down when they are lying essentially motionless right near the surface. Have seen many scenarios where the squid that is disabled and about to be engulfed shoot its ink load and watch as the Striper moves around the ink cloud to suck the squid down. Squid will appear white when dead, however they can really light up when excited. My best pattern as been a "Squid" Whistler. I've attached a couple of pictures. I like to use a slightly longer collar of marabou. The marabou folds back when the fly is in the water and mimicks the fins around the cone at the head. The Stripers have a hard time saying no to this fly when they are munching on squid. [click here to display pictures] |
