Contributors to this Forum are certainly some of the leading advocates of tying flies on 60 degree jig hooks. I've never tied such flies before and am curious about where people mount the eyes for Clousers and Half and Halfs and the fly actions they experience from the various mounting positions. My curiousity stems from an article by Steve Cali in the recent (March/April, 2012) issue of Fly Fishing in Salt Waters and the demo tying video on the magazine web site. In the article, Cali positions the eyes half way between the hook point and the bend of the jig hook. I believe Dan Blanton ties his flies this way. In the demo video, the tier locates the eyes much closer to the 60 degree bend. Eyes could also be positioned right over the hook point for a rear weighting effect. My guess is that with the eyes forward, the fly sinks head down and jigs up and down with a retrieve. With the eyes in the middle, the fly says fairly level when sinking and during a retrieve. With the eyes at the rear, some darting action is achieved with intermittant retrieves. But, not having done any personal testing yet, I really don't know. I'd appreciate comments from those who have already experimented.
