| Steve -- There are lots of ways to prevent rabbit strips from fouling. Where the strip is tied on the hook point side of the shank (i.e., the hook rides point up), you pierce the hide with the hook point and bind it tightly to the underside of the shank. Tied this way -- as shown in some of the photos -- I never have fouling issues. Also, Magnum strips, as opposed to 1/8 inch strips, foul less. When the strip is tied straight off the top of the shank, as Henry suggests, a mono spike works well, but I prefer a mono loop. Some tie the mono loop on first and then tie the strip over it, but an even better way is to tie the strip on first, tie a small mono loop immediate above the tie in point, and then pull the strip up through the loop -- works every time! If doing that procedure on a Clouser, everything's "upside-down," so tie on your strip with the fur facing the point of the hook, tie on a loop of mono, and then pull the strip up through the mono. I like 20 lb Mason the best, but any stiff mono works. |
