Here's a timely report, in view of the post a few down inquiring about tarpon fishing in Puerto Rico. My friend Dave and I fished in Puerto Rico on February 26-29, arranged with Caribbean Outfitters through our own Capt. Bill Hutchinson. We stayed at the brand-new Tarpon Nest Lodge right on the main lagoon of this mangrove fishery, operated by Capt. Omar Orraca and his partners. Our excellent guide was Capt. Dave, who worked hard, put us on fish, and was entertaining as well. We saw lots of baby tarpon as well as ladyfish (no snook at this time of year) and managed to bring some to hand. At night we dined at fine seafood restaurants in San Juan, only a few minutes away. This is a fine fishery, and the videos of blitzing tarpon on Capt. Orraca's website are accurate; we came upon one of those blitzes and quickly hooked up. (See www.fishinginpuertorico.com).
This is a relatively easy and reasonably priced trip, where you're still in the U.S. of A., using U.S. currency, and everyone speaks English, and there's no customs to clear upon your return.
