Dan- it unwinds itself. It knows where it's head is. It will go about 400 degrees before unwinding in my experience. It works best with steady wind or current resistance. The electronic anchor is great but the GPS driven autopilot is also great. Even in the basic AP mode it corrects to a line drawn by GPS, vs just a compass heading. I love it!! There are situations I prefer the fully manual/cable driven traditional bass boat troller, but for fly fishing the iPilot is sweet!
