I am posting this to see how many folks might be thinking along the same lines.
There are many great venues for fly fishermen, to fish private, and public water in California. I have enjoyed many of them.
However, when I think about the type of fishing I prefer, and the venues I am willing to pay for, I come up short.
Perhaps I am in the minority here, but here are my criteria for "pay for play" venues and my issues with each:
1. Trout: Dry fly opportunities. Problem: Seasonal and variable, and/or a long drive. The best ones are generally crowded.
2. LMB: Top water opportunities. Problem: Very seasonal, and normally limited to morning and evening. Too much time and money for the "window"
3. Delta Stripers: Top water opportunities. Problem: Seasonal, generally limited to morning and evening. Too much time and money for the "window".
4. SL Stripers: Top water opportunities. Problem: Seasonal, generally limited to morning and evening, and greatly impacted by wind.
5. Beach Stripers: Top water opportunities. Problem: I do not have enough casts in my arm to endure the rigor. Grin!
Now, here is my suggestion for some enterprising individual, who would create a viable opportunity to satisfy my "itch" for which I am more than willing to pay!
A shallow lake....full of big carp.....fishable by wading, or perhaps from a skiff....all sight fishing, all day!
That's it! Note: Please don't lecture me on my "narrow perspective", or "what I am missing"! I'm curious to see if some of you share my passion (illness? Grin!).
Note to Fish & Game: How about enhancing some of the public duck hunting areas, keep them flooded, and accommodate a carp fishery? I would be more than happy to pay the same duck hunting entry fee, to sight fish for carp!
