I don't think it was the bucket factor this time. The local custom was that when you stepped out of your spot it could be taken. So whenever I hooked a fish, somebody else would slide into my spot. But your point was the one I was trying to make- too many variables, and a good idea not to jump to conclusions quickly regarding why things went right or wrong. Good to think about both fish and human behavior when figuring stuff out.
OTOH, when it comes to finding and positioning on the bucket, I'm pretty useless- hardly ever do this kind of fishing. But I did have a chance to fish coho with one of the masters (Bob Nauheim - thanks to this board, I got in on a Stamp River trip). I got some serious schooling on what happens when one angler figures out where the bucket is and sets up patiently at just the right spot, making the right cast at the right time, while the other guy just aimlessly follows the fish around firing off casts. At least I had a better view of the master in action than I would have had from the parking lot :-)
