I just got back last night from a week on the Missouri. The flow was still at about 10,000cfs and the fishing was spotty. Most of the fish caught were by guy/guides chasing balloons. I have to be honest with you, and it may be a defect on my part, but I cannot tolerate more than about an hour of that per trip. I go to the MO for the hopper fishing in mid- to late August with the hope that we'll get plenty of shots at "heads." This year the hopper fishing was just getting going. The hoppers that were flushed from the banks were small (around an inch) and flightless. Although we didn't catch nearly the number of fish the indi guys were getting, we caught enough to keep us happy using hoppers. We also had more shots at heads this year, mostly from a very prolific trico hatch/spinner fall each day with some occasional micro caddis as well. I consider that to be the big leagues of trout fishing and often only a fish or two per day will be your result. But, man I love throwing a four weight in a hefty wind to a 20"+ fish using a #16-18 hook and 5x tippet in those kinds of flows! The two of us probably didn't catch as many fish in six days as some guys caught in one morning with nymphs, but we had a blast doing it. Already scheduled for next year. Enjoyed reading your report, Bill.
