Actually a fly reel is anything you can put on a fly rod that is acceptable, for recording purposes by IGFA, but it really depends on you, and what fits your ideas.
I suggest that you get hold of a Penn 49L Mariner reel, very nice and very cheap, and use that to get you in the right mind set. It will do anything a fly reel should do, mounted under the rod, but the spool goes backward, which is very easy to get used to.
It will put ALL the DD reels into the bin, never to be removed, and I'm not kidding.
