From what I have seen, I believe most sealed drags are proprietary to the manufacturers--Orvis claims stainless steel and carbon fiber, Galvan stainless and thermoplastic, etc. I know that the Nautilus NV reels have a unique sealed system, which includes ceramic bearings and titanium shafts with a "hermetically sealed"(to use the Nautilus homepage claim) drag system that is part cork and carbon fiber.I believe the ceramic bearings come from Japan, and not from a little old lady with a kiln in Hialeah..Then again, you can get really picky and consider that there are only so many suppliers or manufacturers of aircraft grade aluminum.
From what I can tell, it's not so much how interchangeable the parts may or may not be, but what a manufacturer does with those parts that gives a reel its value. How many flyline manufacturers are there? or flouro manufacturers?
