There is a really interesting debate going on now in the scientific community about how to think about non-native species, with some very prominent scientists now arguing that maybe it's time to jettison the overly simplistic idea that native = good, non-native = bad. The original paper was published in the journal "Nature" this summer, by an ecologist named Mark Davis (along with a bunch of others), then a reply signed by 141 other ecologists, many of them also famous (in the field, anyway), was published in response to the original.
