Thanks to all who have replied, plenty of food for thought. I have been watching eBay for used but the one I probably want if money wasn't an issue (Tibor Riptide) seems to get snapped up pretty damn fast!
Dan I hadn't heard of Solitude or Sea Level before so I'll check them out along with the Redington that Bill also mentioned. Chuck, I think the Haydens although apparently bullet-proof will be a bit heavy for me - same with that other Antipodean import the Alvey.
I'm surprised no one mentioned the Colton (particularly the Torrent model) as it's US made, is meant to have a monster drag and robust spindle and is not that expensive. Is there a reason or just no experience of it here so far?
One other thing I should say. I suspect most people here after the bigger stuff are fishing from boats. I'm not sure I will be able to do that all the time (or even at all?) so the level of resistance to shore-based abuse like sand, dropping on rocks and dunking is in my mind - hence my interest in Tibor-style cork drag setup. |
