In my experience the presentation that works best for gar is to cast at oncoming fish (facing you), drop the fly a little to the side and behind the head so that when you strip the fly it will pass the fish at an angle. Gar fish eyes are way out to the side and with that big beak in front of them, I don't think they see very well directly in front of them. The fly passing them at an angle comes right through their field of vision at a spot that they can easlity snap their jaws to the side and eat. A number of other anglers I've talked to have noticed the same thing.
