First, make sure it's not too high. It should be worn LOW, like a gun slinger, hence the name Hip Shooter. The angle is better that way for the line to clear the pins. Second, remove a few pins if the problem persists. I take out the pin below the hole for the rod. That pin gets in the way of the reel when the rod is in the basket and can be the pin that grabs line, again, because of the angle the line is shooting. Regardless, experiment with pin configuration, that is the advantage of the different length and number of pins. I typically use them all except the one I mentioned but your lines may require something different. Third, YES, it takes at least a day to get used to, after that, you won't know you are wearing it. If you have not used a stripping basket before, any device will take a while to get used to. If you have not worn a stripping basket like the Orvis or Hip Shooter, then of course it will seem uncomfortable at first, but you get used to it faster than you think. Hope this helps.
