I brought this fact up to my favorite boat dealer and the owners said that it wasn't that Mercs weren't selling on their own, it was done to give Mercs a competitive advantage re: pricing on boat packages.
It's a tough deal. I have a 10 year old Crestliner Fishhawk with an 80 hp Yamaha 4 stroke on it. I've fished (and guided) upwards of 150 to 180 or more days a year on that outboard in all kinds of weather. I just had to replace the starter and it's gone through a couple impellers. That's it - apart from routine oil changes and spark plugs.
I know guides who use Mercs and love them. If a new Yammy is a grand or two more than a comparable Merc, I'd grab it. But I'm not opposed to giving a Merc a chance. I talk to every Merc owner I can find (and there are plenty around here.) Most folks love them. |
