It's because we're lazy Phil - at least I am; and we know from experience that it will be OK. I hate producing blind splices in small diameter lines and that's why I quit doing it years ago and I've never lost a fish because I used a Bimini loop to join backing or other good knot.
Actually, I've never spliced backing pieces together in order to save money or material. I always spool on a single length as needed. If I don't have enough backing on the bulk spool for a particular reel, I just don't use it.
We're talking trout fishing here, not billfishing.
