Excellent points Max--competence is a broad range of skills--my limited flyfishing experience has taught me that what I am best at involves seeing fish from a distance(tailers, dorsals etc). I would not pretend to even come close to the competence of long time flyfishers who can cast anything under any condition and I admire their "adaptabilty". Then again, I gave up competing in the angling world long ago in my offshore days--so I am happy now with my best casts with my favorite gear.Oddly, the 9 lb bonefish I caught last weekend could have been caught by Ray Charles or Stevie Wonder doing the casting.Does the term "suicidal bonefish" have any resonance here? Did I shun that fish's overture to be caught and released because a perfect cast of sixty feet wasn't involved? heck no!
