I believe sockeye need a lake in the course of their migration for juvenile habitat. Kokanee are simply dumped into lakes and the ones in the Truckee are washouts from the many area reservoirs stocked with kokes.
The browns feed on spilled eggs and nymphs kicked up by nest-building kokes, but mostly they are eating chunks of flesh from the rotting fish. From shore the browns are exceedingly difficult to see under the movement and shadows of the kokes.
I have rarely (maybe never?) seen either rainbows or whitefish inside the kokanee schools.
