WSB's being caught on the fly happen, but not always when being targeted. Even bait fisherman can not always target these fish. When the bite is on, it is on and when it's not it's not.

As far as flies, these fish do in fact eat a lot of squid, but also mackeral. Many of the bait folks around La Jolla will soak a big mackeral around the kelp beds.

So fly choices will vary. With that said I have had the pleasure of hooking a few of these including a former world record some years back and none of the fish I caught where on squid patterns, but rather deciever style flies in mackeral colors (either blue or green). As a mater of fact my go to fly would be the "Minty Mack" clouser in 2/0 to 4/0 that Al "Q" and I have been tying.

Many choices, but my two cents.
