I was on a late summer fly fishing trip to Loreto for Dorado many years ago, winding down the late afternoon, post fishing, also in the bar, trying to get outside a pitcher of margarita's when I noticed a bunch of commotion down at the beach. A couple of macho snorkelers with rubber band spear guns had punched a few holes this very odd looking fish in 5 feet of water, that had to weigh 40 to 50 pounds. Everybody was trying to guess what it was. One of the locals stated with authority that it was an amberjack. I really didn't think it was but not coming up with any other plausible reference, I went along with his declaration. It wasn't until years later in Sport Fishing magazine that I saw a picture of a Louvar and recognized it as the same fish. As I recall, line caught specimens are rare. I think I remember the article saying that like Mola Mola (sun fish), they eat jelly fish as well as other slow moving prey.
