|Yes, the newer stuff is "better". But I have used the old lead core trolling line for heads starting 40 years ago (when there were NO alternatives)and, if catered to to some extent and used correctly, it is fully serviceable. AND CHEAP!|
In fact, I still have two rolls 40 years old. They cost me $5 then and have provded more than 20 heads over the years.
One could go the lo-tech method, measure the weight/foot and then cut off at the appropriate weight (in grains) for the weight of your rod. Or...........you can use the Hi-tech method of stringing the line on your rod uncut, put the spool on the ground, and start false-casting. When the weight and loading on your rod feels RIGHT, hold that length static and lay the rod on the ground. Cut off the head at the rod tip top.
Works every time! Affix to shooting line and begin dredging.
