Best quality cork is easily available, you just have to buy it. I build most of my flyrods and one of my friends who is a custom rod builder makes the grips for those. He only uses the very best quality cork rings from Portugal without ANY filler and the material costs are about 4-5 USD. He doesn't buy cork in masses as he only builds about 10-40 flyrods a year. I think it shouldn't be a problem to put the best quality cork grips on high-end flyrods.
