I agree with you. Crappy cork grips are still crappy, and filler doesn't make them any better!
I welcome any improvements to standard cork: composite cork, or even a synthetic material.
However, I always shape my grip, so whatever the grip, it must hold up to shaping. When I shape a standard cork grip I always seem to expose the gaping holes and flaws, which means I have to fill the holes, even on a new rod. grrrrr!
Hey, if composite cork is good enough (actually better, I'm told) for the wine industry, it should be good for fly fishermen too! Grin!
