Steve:

DIY fishing in the Keys is very tough, especially around Key West. I wouldn't count on that for a first option.

If it was me, I'd make a reservation with a guide no matter what. Key West is one of the world's greatest fishing spots, and, if you haven't been to Florida since the 60s, you owe it to yourself to experience whatever's available.

If the weather's really cold, lots of guides will leave the bones and permit around Key West and motor across Florida Bay to the Flamingo area where you can try for redfish and snook.

Contact Capt. Bruce Chard in Big Pine Key. BPK is about 35 miles up the road from Key West and a good jumping off point for all sorts of fishing. Better call soon. The good Keys guides stay booked long in advance.

Hope you have a great trip.

Bill
