Rings are definitely superior, but snake guides will handle abuse a little better. If you're flying and the TSA inspectors manage to smash a ring guide at all, it shatters the insert and basically renders the rod worthless. I've had that happen twice now; once with a stripping guide on a TFO and another time with the tip top on my T&T 16wt which, incidentally, has all snake guides except the tip top and stripping guides.
