If you're going to use a commercial product, I would suggest Knot Perfect. When I sit down at my desk and tie knots I always use it. They glide together better than when using spit or any other commercial product I've tried. The knots will appear smaller when tightened which means you know they're as tight as possible. Usually when I'm on the water, especially when wading, I get by with slobbering, but otherwise I always use Knot Perfect. It was a George Gehrke product that I believe is now marketed by Wapsi. Truthfully, it still won't help much if your diameters are too dissimilar.
