I use white braided loops and use a "Roman Numeral" type system, marking the white braid with a black Sharpie. I use a wide band, all the way around the circumference of the line for a "5", and use smaller lines for "1's". If you use a whhip finish with Aquaseal like I do, leave room between the bands because the ink will "bleed" a little. If they are too close together, they will merge. So looking at the finished head, it sort of looks like Morse Code.
